Design of a new observation, research and educational technology tool that will provide high-quality, low-cost, rapid-deployment astronomical data collection and teaching capabilities that will answer some of the needs expressed by the U.S. Government and by the contemporary, multi-discipline, astronomical research community. The systems consists of a mobile platform and is capable of transporting a 60 to 120 inch optical telescope. The system is known as a Mobile Astronomical Research Vehicle; MARV. Also on board will also contain two 40mm f/10 telescopes, one equipped with calcium-K hydrogen-a filter for solar research and the other with a calcium-K filtration to view violet/blue isolation of ionized calcium deeper in the chromosphere. The transport unit is a modified 45 foot MCI Road Bus and the main telescope is a modified 120 inch Ritchey-Creitien system. The unit is fully self-contained and will carry a staff of four. Maximum weight is 55,000 pounds. The unit is self-sustaining. |
